Freedom

Freedom

Today I sit back, humbly as I think about this day. Memorial Day. I am afforded certain comforts of this world. Much to the thanks of our great country and our military. I never forget, for an instant, the life I lead as a military spouse of a retired combat veteran. More importantly so, the life I could have lead without. Jason lost many friends in combat, who are never forgotten. And today, we remember and honor those cannot enjoy those same freedoms they fought for as equally. The day itself was originally known as Decoration Day, and grew accustom as the amount of the fallen soldiers rose considerably after the Civil War. The nation’s first national cemeteries were established and the graves of those fallen were “decorated” with flowers and prayers. In 1868, the call for a nationwide day of remembrance was rallied for by General John A. Logan. The day was chosen as it did not fall on the anniversary of any particular battle. Cities across the United States began to host parades and memorialize those fallen in war. Some choose to honor the fallen in their own way, some choose to have BBQs or celebrate. I choose to remember the fact that I am healthy, my family is together, no more underways, no more deployments, no more wondering when I might get the dreaded call. I am grateful for those that answer the call to serve, and always remember to be grateful that I have this life because of those who fought and never made it home. On today, Memorial Day 2023, I remember the fallen with grace and humility.
